We’ve probably already put up and decorated our Christmas trees, but did you know? Evergreen fir trees are universal winter decorations. Medieval families displayed evergreen branches as a reminder that spring would come back and Romans placed them around temples to honor Saturn, the god of agriculture. In the 16th century, Germans brought evergreen trees inside their homes as a symbol of eternal life. When news spread that Queen Victoria and her German husband Prince Albert decorated a Christmas tree in their palace, the practice became popular in both England and North America.
